What Is Scottish Stained Glass? A Glance at Colorado Springs’ Most Beautiful Stained Glass

When working with new clients, often the question that we receive the most is, What is Scottish Stained Glass? We understand how this matter can be somewhat confusing. After all, stained glass gained much of its popularity in Europe during the times of Roman Gothic architecture and is best known for its existence in cathedrals, churches, and chapels located throughout Europe.

However, when it comes to our stained glass, Scottish is more than just a term that references the origins of our work. It also has to do a lot with our processes and our history as a company.

History of Colorado Springs Stained Glass

Colorado Springs Stained Glass is a satellite office of Scottish Stained Glass. Our main office is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, but we have many regional locations as well, including one in Colorado Springs. The company was founded by Martin Faith, highly esteemed stained glass artisan from Glasgow, Scotland.

Martin began the company in the year 1989 when he moved to Colorado, bringing his stained glass collection with him. Since an early age, he had been practicing the ancient techniques and methods used to make stained glass windows that had been passed down by his Scottish relatives for decades. When Martin learned the trade, he was instructed by his father, who was, by profession, an engineer.

Over the course of time, Martin and his father began to develop a very specific system for their manufacturing process. Through a combination of engineering science and traditional techniques, they found that they were able to produce windows of a very high quality, that were not only beautiful, but structurally sound as well. The old techniques of glass making were not abandoned, but rather enhanced with modern technology.

What’s in a Name?

Scottish Stained Glass, therefore, is not only the name of our company, but also glass that is produced specifically using our proprietary process. Just like the works produced by Scottish artisans centuries ago, our windows are handcrafted and designed. Many are also embellished with traditional imagery and motifs. Though much of the process is similar to that of our predecessors, we like to think of our work as being a little bit more evolved and enhanced, due to the assistance of modern technology.
