Featured Stained Glass Restoration Project: Rose Hills
At Colorado Springs Stained Glass, we get the opportunity to work on all types of stained glass windows. This is truly a pleasure for us. We are great admirers of stained glass artisans. It’s an honor to be able to be restore their masterpieces and keep their artwork alive. Recently, we had the chance to work on a particularly rewarding project that involved a unique style of glass artwork called Dalle Glass. Below, we’ve discussed this stained glass restoration project in detail and how our Colorado Springs team contributed to the preservation of the Dalle Glass.
Dalle Glass Restoration for Rose Hills Chapel
Rose Hills is a famous memorial chapel used for funeral services. The chapel is located in a park within a beautiful hilltop setting that features lush gardens striking scenery. Within the chapel is an enchanting Dalle Glass composition that serves as a background for services. When the sunlight shines through the glass, it fills the chapel with a beautiful array of colors. Looking at the glass is calming and fills one with a sense of peace.
Unfortunately, it recently came to the owner’s attention that the Dalle Glass was falling apart. The cement grouting holding the windows together was starting to crumble and sections were coming loose. This posed a serious safety hazard. We were asked to restore the stained glass to its original strength and beauty.
Our Approach: Repair & Reconstruction Process
We decided the best way to resolve the owner’s concerns was to remove the stained glass, take it apart, and reconstruct it. This way, we could replace the crumbling cement.
We removed the sections one at a time and completed the repairs onsite. While the stained glass restoration was underway, we created temporary graphics that could be used in place of each missing section. This way, its appearance would be unchanged and funeral services could continue as normal.
First, we cut out all the glass with a tile saw, then rebuilt each section. The chapel was built with curved walls that arched inward and the window had been built in the same curved design. Therefore, we had to repour the epoxy in the same shape. Additionally, we had to use matching roofing granules to make sure that each section being repaired would match the original appearance of the composition.
Now, the stained glass is stronger than ever is no longer a safety concern for those who come to visit.
